The Barrack Road Gang
Posted by unspun on December 12, 2006
Remember the Barrack Road Gang, those naughty boys (except for Chai Owi who was a goody good boy those days) who lived in Barrack Road? Well, they had a reunion-within-a-reunion at our Reunion (I’m still hung over).
Here are their memorabilia shots at the Reunion. Stay tuned on this blog for more photos to be posted here (Woon Yih, this is the time to show what you’ve learned about blogging).
The Barrack Road Gang trying to hide their double chins. Alan too drunk to to bother hiding anything.
Said gang trying a more conventional approach to posing. Notice that there is no necessary improvement to how they look

One more time…with feeling
Posted by unspun on December 11, 2006
Sorry guys but in the previous posting thanking everyone for the great time we had on Saturday, I accidentally locked the comments section. The result has been a lot of cross posting.
I blame it on the lingering hangover from Saturday (but it seems like I was not the only one: Kah Thiam could not wake up to meet us at Ah Lan Chiea’s for breakfast, although even if he did he would not have met us. SOME of us slept till much later and was thereafter heard saying: “owwww. my head. I need to rehydrate”)
Anyway, to make amends I’m gathering the comments posted by Kah Thiam, Leong Hin, Kumar, Alan and others here. For the rest of you if you want to make any comments, hit the “comments” link at the bottom of this posting.
In the meantime here’s a photo of us and the Convent girls at New Club. There will be more photos to be posted as I get my act together. Leong Hin and Kumar have just sent me some photos. I’ve just arrived back in Jakarta so over the next few days I’ll post them on this blog.

Check this out, we almost got mistaken for aunties
Posted by unspun on December 11, 2006
This is a funny link from a Georgian but not one from Taiping. (click here to view).
The blogger thought we were old aunties from St Georges Penang but it looks like we uncles are more tech savvy then our counterparts in the prissy island a few miles away.

Thanks for the Great Time guys
Posted by unspun on December 11, 2006
I’m sure that like me all of you who were at the reunion dinner and its aftermath enjoyed themselves, although the hangover the next day was not so fun.I think there’s few things more fun to meet up with old friends, friends from a part of our lives before we became adults, moved into the corporate world, learnt not to let our guard down. Friends from a time of relative innocence who will forever occupy a special part of our memories for the rest of our lives.
Many thanks to Kok Chan, Jimmy Gan and all the rest who’ve helped to make it a success. We are very grateful to you for making it happen.
Over the next few days I’ll be posting some photographs from that night (I can’t now because I’m using my mother’s computer in KL and its very old and slow). Some of you also took photos and you can either send it to me (ong@maverick.co.id) or to Woon Yih for uploading on to this blog.
Moving ahead I think we have some events to look forward to:
- The enxt gathering sometime next year at Eng Choon’s palace (Eng Choon has no say in this as we’ve volunteered his house). Who shall we get to be the organizer.
- Continued posting on this blog. I’ll try my best to keep this blog current but I need others to help edit and contribute articles etc as well. Please let me know if you can spare some time. Many hands make light work, etc.
- A reunion in Bali in three years time, when we will all be hitting the half century mark. I’ll undertake to organizehis event, in which you should bring your spouses. We can go drinking and your wives will love you more because they cango shopping and indulge themselves in the spa.
So guys stay tuned for more action.
Hey Unspun, sorry for butting in since you “turned off” the comments link. (BTW, this is Woon Yih here) Ahh, since you are in KL now, are you free to give us a call and go for that drink which you missed the last time but I think Seng Fatt is in Penang. Choon Wan is definitely around and I’m sure he can take time off from his busy fruit arrangement appointments! (whatever that is)
I’ll have to join you to thank Jimmy, Kok Chan, Kah Thiam, Wai Yin, Kok Chay, Guat Tin, Param (Singh
!!) for organizing this and making it a success.
Kok Chan, as for the list of names and contact details which you were busily collecting that night, email the list to me once it’s ready so that I can get it uploaded.
For the one or two of you who were so “afraid” that your faces will be put up on the ‘net, please let me know through here or at wyhwang@gmail.com so that I can email you the photograph(s), otherwise it’s going to go up soon.
and to all of you out there, thanks for the memories.
Have a nice day.

All set to go
Posted by unspun on December 8, 2006
There’s been some last-minute pullouts. Choong Ooi Khang, Aundrey Smith and Thuraisamy could not make it for personal reasons so we’re down to 62, which is still a healthy number for a reunion.
Kah Thiam says that to be fair to organizers Jimmy Gan and Kok Chan, those pulling out from today onwards will still need to pay for the reunion since the Dynamic Duo has had to book the places from the restaurant.
That said, look forward to seeing you guys tomorrow night. Leong Hin was saying something to me on Skype about meeting up for some pre-dinner drinks. Leong Hin, if you have a place and time in mind, please post the info here.
So see you at Hup Woh Restaurant, Kota Road at 7.15pm!

December 11th, 2006 at 7:27 am eTHANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
on behalf of kok chan, jimmy, param, kee chew, wai ying and guat tin i would like to thank you guys for making the event such a memorable one. actually we the commitee did line up some activities for the night but we could not possibly control such an undisciplined crowd(meself included). but afterall how could we blame ourselves for we have 30 years of catching up to do.it was really great seeing all of you for it truly brought back memories of what we used to be more before we were turned to all the corporate monsters we have become ha ha ha. anyway for those who have taken pictures during the night pls send them either to hock chuan or woon yih. i will contact kok leong later when he has finished processing the dvd which was recorded during the evening. so for those who did not make it this time, there is the gathering at eng choon’s palace(huh) next year and the biggie in bali 3 years down the road. keep this blog alive for it is truly a great way to communicate with each other.
p/s: sorry peter, aik guan, hock chuan and leong hin. did not join you at ah lan cheah for koay teow the next morning for i only woke up after 9 am.
December 11th, 2006 at 7:35 am eHi guys, I’m at home in KL on emcee – bad hangover yesterday coupled with a severe stomach flu. Luckily I had Aly Looi to drive me down to KL last night.
December 11th, 2006 at 8:34 am e I too would like to echo the sentiments by Hock Chuan. It was a lovely evening meeting up with many people that I have not met 30 years. Thank you Kok Chan and Jimmy for organising a memorable evening.
